Build Update: Suspension, Skids & Tires — Where It All Started

Every build starts somewhere. For this rig, it started with the three things that matter most for any serious off-road setup: suspension, protection, and tires. Here’s how the foundation was laid.

Suspension First

A 3-inch lift was the first order of business. Not just for looks — proper suspension geometry, increased ground clearance, and the ability to run larger tires without rubbing are all critical for technical trail work. The goal was a setup that performs on the rocks without beating you to death on the highway.

Full Skid Coverage

If you wheel serious terrain, skids aren’t optional. Steel coverage over the oil pan, transfer case, and fuel tank means you can commit to lines without second-guessing every boulder. Hit something hard enough to matter — and you’ll be glad they’re there.

Tires: Sizing Up

285s on an aggressive all-terrain tread pattern. The wider footprint and taller sidewall make a massive difference on loose terrain — more surface contact, more flex, more traction. Fuel economy takes a hit. Worth it every time.
